ToT Workshop Held in Khulna to Enhance Contribution of Coastal Teachers in STEM Education
A day-long teacher training workshop was held in Khulna with the aim of increasing the contribution of coastal teachers in promoting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, especially for girls. The workshop, organized under the "STEM and ICT Skills for the Girls of Coastal Areas" project, saw the participation of 30 teachers from six secondary schools in the districts of Khulna, Bagerhat, and Satkhira.
In three separate sessions, the teachers received hands-on training in science, mathematics, programming, and robotics. The sessions were conducted by Mr. Md. Rezaul Karim, a trainer from Rangpur Teachers Training College, Ahmed Shahriar, co-founder of Banglar Math and former senior consultant of the Math Olympiad, Mosharraf Hossain Tipu, coordinator of Scratch Bangladesh, and Afridi, mentor of the World Robot Olympiad.
The trainers emphasized the importance of presenting mathematics and science as problem-solving tools to students, which would increase their participation in information technology. During the sessions, teachers expressed their appreciation for the practical, hands-on approach to teaching mathematics, science, and programming, which they found highly inspiring compared to traditional theoretical training.
The project, supported by the Malala Fund and implemented under the guidance of the Bangladesh Freedom Foundation, operates in three coastal upazilas: Rupsha in Khulna, Rampal in Bagerhat, and Tala in Satkhira. The project has been conducting workshops in programming, robotics, science, and mathematics for over 300 female students from six secondary schools, including Shahid Ali Ahmad Government Girls' High School in Satkhira, Shahid Kamel Model High School, Comrade Ratan Sen Collegiate Girls' High School in Satkhira, Naihati Secondary Girls' School in Khulna, Perikhali Model High School in Bagerhat, and Boro Katali Multipurpose High School in Bagerhat.
To ensure the sustainability of the project’s goals, the teacher training workshop was organized to involve the teaching staff from these schools in future activities. Following the conclusion of the workshop, the event was marked by a celebratory cake-cutting and flower presentation in honor of World Teachers' Day, with all participating teachers joining in the celebration.
